VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT CALCULATOR
Use our free volumetric weight calculator to calculate final chargeable weight when using air freight service.
Volumetric Weight = CBM Volume x 167
Actual Weight = Gross Weight
Why Need to Calculate Volumetric Weight ?
You may already know the chargeable unit is weight ( per kilogram ) for air shipping service.
However, besides the weight, volume is another key factor in air shipping cost calculation.
Question is what’s the final chargable weight by air shipping ?
The answer is final chargeable weight is depend on the large one between actual weight and volumetric weight according to the rules of IATA.
If the volumetric weight exceeds the actual weight of the shipment, then volumetric weight will becomes the final chargeable weight.
Bottom line ?
Pay attention to the cargo volume when using air service. If the cargo is light, the big volume will effect the whole price a lot.
Repack well and decrease the volume so to avoid unncessary chargeable weight.
For Example :
If you have 6 boxes ( each 0.8 x 0.6 x 0.5 m, 30 kg ), then the volumetric weight 6 x 0.8 x 0.6 x 0.5 x 167 = 240.5 KG ;
And gross weight 6 x 30 = 180 kg.
So final chargeabe weight you need to pay is 240.5 KG, not 180 kg.
FAQ
How to use this volumetric weight tool ?
It’s quite simple.
All you need to do is to input the quantities of the box, and the dimention & weight of each box.
Then you will get the results of both volumetric weight and actual weight.
Compare the numerical value.
The bigger one is the weight you gonna be charged.
How to reduce the volumetric weight ?
A key tip is never to use the oversize box, use a box or pallet that’s the right size.
But memember to avoid excessive packing, as this could increase the risks of cargo damange.
What if the data is not correct ?
This calculator provides you the weight you gonna be charged by air based on the data you input.
If the data is wrong or inaccurate, the final weight and quote could be differ a lot.
So get your China supplier measure the boxes or pallets accurately, so that you can get a correct air quote.
It should be noted that the weight calculated by this tool is estimated.
Because airline warehouse will reweigh and remeasure after goods delivered.
That weight data will be shown on AWB, and it is final what you need to pay accordingly.
What‘s the difference between air freight and courier for volumetric weight calculation ?
The formula scale is different.
Air Freight Volumetric weight = Volume in cubic centimeter / 6000 ( or Volume in cubic meter x 167 ).
Courier Volumetric weight = Volume in cubic centimeter / 5000 ( or Volume in cubic meter x 200 ).
For example,
When you have cargo of 3 CBM, 200 kg,
If you use air shipping service, final chargeable weight is volumetric weight 3 x 167 = 501 KG
If you use courier service, final chargeable weight is volumetric weight 3 x 200 = 600 KG
Because airline warehouse will reweigh and remeasure after goods delivered.
That weight data will be shown on AWB, and it is final what you need to pay accordingly.
